Renewing our mind
25 February 2007
The mission of our church is to be a Christ-centred, disciple-making church committed to obeying the Great Commandment and the Great Commission. How do we proceed to do this? In this mission, the end point is to be a disciple-making church. We measure our success by whether or not we are making disciples. However, in order to make disciples, we must first be good disciples ourselves. We have to start with each one of us being transformed into the likeness of Christ. Only a church that is made up of true disciples whose eyes are fixed on Christ can be disciple-making. If our church is made up of truly regenerate people, then we will be able to live up to this mission.
To be a disciple, we must first have received salvation from God which comes by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone and is not due to any work of our own. Then God will begin the work in us to make us into the likeness of Christ. Let us check ourselves on this. Have we heard the Gospel? Are we obeying the commands of God? Are we bearing the fruit of the Spirit in our lives? Are we praying regularly? Are we studying His Word regularly? Do we love and care for members of our church body? Are we denying ourselves daily instead of conforming to the pattern of this world? Are we looking forward to the return of Christ?
This year, we have set our theme as "Renewing Our Mind". The theme verse is:
Romans 12:2: "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - His good, pleasing and perfect will."
It is our desire that individually and as a church, our lives will be transformed through the renewing of our minds. That our lives will exhibit the godly characteristics described in Romans 12.
With this theme, we have a twin focus: the goal of life transformation and the renewing of minds as the means of this transformation. We believe that the proper teaching of the Word and our active obedience to the Word are essential for this renewal. We want this year to be a year where the importance of the Word of God is firmly etched in our minds and its power evident in our lives, all to His glory.
When we are true disciples of Christ, we will naturally want to obey His command to go and make disciples. We will be willing to take action to preach the Gospel. It is not enough just to show people our lifestyle of following Christ, we must also provide a verbal witness, i.e. we must preach the Gospel. When others hear the Gospel, the Spirit of God may then cause them to believe and come to faith in Jesus Christ. So we must seize every opportunity to preach the Gospel.
With this vision of becoming a disciple-making church in mind, let us come alongside one another and participate wholeheartedly in the various activities lined up for this year. These are some of the activities:
- Weekly Sunday School classes
- Weekly Friday prayer meetings
- Care Group activities, especially when we start the adult fellowship groups
- Church-wide Bible teaching series
- Evangelism training
- Evangelistic outreach during Good Friday, Mid-Autumn Festival and Christmas
The children of Zion must follow their King. They cannot turn back. They have cast in their lot with the people of God.
May God help us.
